"Chinoiserie" is the European interpretation and imitation of Chinese artistic traditions, especially in the decorative arts, garden design, architecture, literature, theatre and music. Chinese melodies and philosophy started influencing Western sounds in the early 19th century; composers have sought and found inspiration in Chinese music and poetry and used it to create new work over the past several centuries.
