La Maestra : International Competition for Women Conductors - Finals – Διεθνής Διαγωνισμός για Γυναίκες Διευθύντριες Ορχήστρας -Ο τελικός

And here we are! Of the fourteen candidates who came from all over the world to take part in the 2022 edition of La Maestra, only three candidates have made it to the final. Each of them must present a work from the repertoire and a contemporary creation to a professional jury.

La Maestra is a competition for women conductors that has its roots in a depressing statistic: only 4% of conductors engaged to work for French cultural institutions are women. To remedy this situation, in 2020 the @Philharmonie de Paris  and the Paris Mozart Orchestra organised the first edition of this international women-only competition.

Fourteen candidates from all over the world are taking part in this new edition of La Maestra. The first two days of the competition are devoted to the playoffs, the third to the semi-final and the fourth to the final, which means that only three of them are now left to compete for the title of laureate. In order to decide which of them goes through, these conductors of a variety of ages must conduct various works, including classics from the repertoire as well as contemporary creations.

Three candidates are taking part in this stage of the semi-final. For the concerto, they were able to choose either

Clara Schumann’s Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7

or Maurice Ravel’s Piano Concerto in G major,

while for the opera scene, they were offered an excerpt from Mozart’s Don Giovanni and 3 Lieder by Alma Mahler.

Repertoire:
Clara Schumann - Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 7 (3rd movement)

Maurice Ravel - Piano Concerto in G major (1st movement)

W.A. Mozart - Don Giovanni K.527, Act 1 - n°2 accompanied recitative “Ma qual mai s’offre” and Duetto Donna Anna and Don Ottavio “Fuggi, crudele, fuggi!”

Alma Mahler - 3 Lieder (orchestration David and Colin Matthews) Die stille Stadt - Waldseligkeit - Bei dir ist es traut

This event is organised in the framework of the French Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Competition filmed on 5 March 2022 at the Cité de la Musique-Philharmonie de Paris.
