Symphony No.27 in C minor
Russian State Symphony Orchestra conducted by Valeri PolyanskyI - Adagio - Allegro animato: 0:00
II - Adagio: 14:13
II - Presto ma non troppo: 28:06
Myaskovsky's twenty-seventh and final symphony was written in 1949, at a time when Myaskovsky was seriously ill, finishing it on November 2. It premiered on December 9, 1950 in Moscow, after his death. The first movement begins with a slow melody of the bassoon in its low register, which soon gives way to the first theme of the Allegro, of great strength. The second theme is lyrical in nature with the air of a popular song. During development, the main theme reaches its climax. After the recapitulation the same theme leads us to a brilliant coda. The second movement is built in a tripartite way, beginning with the basses of the orchestra presenting a reflective theme, which increases its expressiveness in repetition. The central part is more dynamic, with a new theme also of popular roots interrupted by strong calls of metals. The last part takes up the initial theme with a new orchestration taking it to its climax in a passionate way. End with a gentle coda. The last movement after an introduction with undulations of the orchestra, presents its main theme of Russian features. A new theme in the form of a triumphal march begins slowly, to be repeated with great solemnity. The themes are repeated in the form of rondo. A brilliant coda finishes the work. An optimistic work written in the last moments of his life. Personal circumstances do not seem to affect him in his writing. He could have written a hymn to life, when he really knew he was slowly dying. His writing using easy themes of popular character, makes it an accessible work, as demanded by the political lines of the moment, a melodic nationalist base appreciated without difficulty by the people. By the end of 1949 his cancer had progressed badly, but he postponed a recommended surgery until May of the following year. But it was too late. When his last symphony was released posthumously, he was given the honors that had been denied him in life.
