 The 1962 version by Clifford Curzon and George Szell is a pure miracle of recording history. This performance is both one of the most overpowering (Szell's introduction of the maestoso, Curzon's trills, the torrential energy of the finale) and one of the most refined (the dark, clear, ecstatic adagio has never been equalled). 

Conductor and soloist impart a phenomenal tension to the discourse while conveying an emotional and poetic breath of unprecedented intimacy. The sound recording is astoundingly clear and dynamic. The ultimate reference! Recorded in 1953, Clifford Curzon's first version almost equals the second version. The English pianist's accents are perhaps even more violent, supported by the extraordinarily intense conducting of Eduard van Beinum. The version recorded with Szell, however, wins out with its miraculous Adagio.
