Stephen Foster (1826-1864), America's most famous 19th Century songster,
composed his music during the last days of slavery in the United
States. His songs are sentimental and frequently celebrate the "happy"
days gone by. Often his choice of words is today is taken with
considerable disapprobation; however, it must be remembered the time in
which these songs were written. In modern times Foster's lyrics are
excised of what are now considered politically incorrect words.
This album, as far as I can find, is the first album of Foster songs
ever recorded and issued in a book set (Victor albumC-5). It is dated in
the late 1920's, coming at the very inception of electric recording.
The Victor Salon group under the direction of Nat Shilkret here play
these old songs in the mode of the day but keeping with the original
lyrics. While a couple of the terms are offensive to today's ears,
please remember that such terms were still in common use during the
first half of the 20th Century.
So, keeping with the historical nature of these very old recordings,
performed in the popular fashion of the 20's, I have not edited or
defaced these very rare cuts. They are here to enjoy for their original
form. The period sentimentality is heavier in this album than in the
companion upload, the Salon music of Ethelbert Nevin also recorded by by
Shilkret's group. The two albums were recorded within months of each
other. Shilkret arranged these with dramatic orchestration and added
even sound effects to one song. Here is Stephen Foster as you most
likely have never heard him, from a period closer to Foster's time than
to our own.1.(0:13) Open Thy Lattice, Love
