James Rosenquist is an American pop artist known for his paintings and
monumental prints. His controversial painting F-111 (1964 – 1965),
designed to surround the gallery audience, offers a visual critique of
American involvement in the Vietnam War, between chaotic destruction and
everyday life imagery. Born November 29, 1933 in Grand Forks, North
Dakota, Rosenquist attended the University of Minnesota before receiving
a scholarship to the Art Students League of New York in 1955, where he
studied with George Grosz, Morris Kantor and Edwin Walter. Dickinson.
Early in his career, Rosenquist worked as a poster painter, later moving
to his studio in Lower Manhattan, where he became friends with
Ellsworth Kelly, Robert Indiana, Agnes Martin, Jasper Johns, Robert
Rauschenberg and Barnett Newman during the 1960s. Moving away from his
cultural references to approach more abstract themes, the artist
continues to work in Aripeka, Florida.
