Zeitgeist proved to be an outstanding example of Alastair Marriott’s work. Marriott’s choreography is varied and shows great understanding of the music he is setting. He made full use of the character and structure of Philip Glass’ Violin Concerto (a beautiful work in its own right and well-worth listening to if you’re not familiar with it), without appearing constrained by it, or merely to imitate the music.
Marriott’s choreography for Osipova appears to show Rumba influences, which Osipova tackles with suitable sassiness. Watson and Osipova are as enthralling as partners as they are soloists and work seamlessly together, but the supporting trio seem (at times) a little under-rehearsed, as demonstrated every time they try to dance in unison.
Marcelino Sambé (newly promoted to Soloist at the Royal Ballet this year) executed a stunning solo in the second movement: his rapid promotion is clearly well deserved (he only graduated into the Royal Ballet company in 2012).
