Hans Hotter (1909-2003) - Wikipedia

When Hans Hotter sang the Winter Journey for the last time in concert, he was approaching his eightieth birthday. When he first performed this song cycle in Hamburg in 1941, the distinguished "heldenbariton" of the younger generation (not only because of his height of 1.95 meters), the imposing Wotan, Don Giovanni and Boris Godunov was 32 years old. (...) Hans Hotter sang the

Winter Journey more than a hundred times: in Vienna, New York, Buenos Aires, London, Melbourne and Sapporo. Since then, his interpretation has become a reference. Hans Hotter knows how not to betray Schubert's thoughts, for he bases himself on what the composer's friend Leopold von Sonnleithner reported: "Schubert did not tolerate violent expression of emotion at all in the interpretation of Lieder. He always kept the same tempo, except in the rare cases where he himself indicated a change. The Lieder singer must relate events and impressions that are in principle foreign to him; he does not represent the person whose feelings he is describing. Anything that impedes the flow of the melody and interferes with the regular course of the accompaniment runs counter to the composer's intentions and negates the musical effect."
