Ξένε, παρά τον Γάγγην κείμαι Σάμιος
ανήρ. Επί της τρισβαρβάρου ταύτης γης
έζησα βίον άλγους, μόχθου, κ’ οιμωγής.
Ο τάφος ούτος ο παραποτάμιος
κλείει δεινά πολλά. Πόθος ακήρατος
χρυσού εις εμπορίας μ’ ώθησ’ εναγείς.
Εις ινδικήν ακτήν μ έρριψ’ η καταιγίς
και δούλος επωλήθην. Μέχρι γήρατος
κατεκοπίασα, ειργάσθην απνευστί –
φωνής Ελλάδος στερηθείς, και των οχθών
μακράν της Σάμου. Όθεν νυν ουδέν φρικτόν
πάσχω, κ’ εις Άδην δεν πορεύομαι πενθών.
Εκεί θα είμαι μετά των συμπολιτών.
Και του λοιπού θα ομιλώ ελληνιστί.
