Ο Nicola Matteis ήταν ο πρώτος αξιοσημείωτος Ιταλός μπαρόκ βιολονίστας στο Λονδίνο, τον οποίο ο Roger North έκρινε εκ των υστέρων «ότι ήταν δεύτερος μετά τον Corelli» και ένας συνθέτης με σημαντική δημοτικότητα στην εποχή του, αν και είχε ξεχαστεί τελείως μέχρι τα τέλη του 20ού αιώνα.
