As part of its fifth annual edition, the Bird Photographer of the Year (BPOTY) 2020 competition organized by the British natural history photo library Nature Photographers Ltd (NPL), has unveiled a selection of shortlisted images culled from more than 15,000 received from photographers representing 60-plus countries around the world.

“The standard of this year’s imagery is simply stunning and it was a very difficult job to whittle the entries down to the shortlist for final judging,” the organizers explained.

A list of the finalists will be announced on April 1, 2020, and the winners will be presented on August 22.

“Winning this competition is getting harder,” said naturalist and TV host Chris Packham, who heads the judging team. “And that’s the way it should be because photography is evolving more rapidly than ever: It is visibly edging closer to being able to facilitate perfection.”

“Every year, the standard just keeps improving, making the job of the judges increasingly tricky,” BPOTY Director and Competition Coordinator Rob Read explained. “There are so many technically brilliant photographs to look at, it takes something truly outstanding to catch the eye I hope that this is demonstrated by the amazing shortlist that the judges have produced this year.”

One of the main aims of the competition is to support bird-related conservation initiatives and to promote both the art of bird photography and the work of wildlife photographers.

The BPOTY is open to professional and amateur photographers and offers a top prize of £5,000 plus other awards including camera equipment, binoculars, outdoor clothing and travel vouchers.

The competition awards the Best Portfolio and gold, silver, bronze and honorable mentions in various categories including Best Portrait, Birds in the Environment, Attention to Detail, Bird Behavior, Birds in Flight, Garden and Urban Birds, Creative Imagery, Young Bird Photographer, Black and White, Inspirational Encounters and Conservation Documentary.
