Edward Elgar : Chanson de nuit - Op. 15, No. 1

Both "Chanson de nuit" and "Salut d’amour" were early works, their success assisting in the gradual establishment of Elgar’s reputation as a composer.

Although Elgar submitted "Chanson de nuit" to Novello’s for publication in 1897, the great authority on the composer, Michael Kennedy, believed that the date of its composition was more likely to have been around 1889-90.

Elgar had called it "Evensong", but his publisher felt that a foreign title would generate more sales, hence its revised name.

Its orchestral version, which Elgar scored in 1899, had its first performance on 14 September 1901 at the Queen’s Hall, conducted by Henry Wood.

Dedicated to Dr Frank Ehrke, a violinist in the Worcestershire Philharmonic, it has a quasi-liturgical quality, disturbed only by a more animated contrasting section with a sighing phrase that builds to a climax.

 Conductor : Finnegan Downie Dear

 Orchestra : Münchner Rundfunkorchester

Painting : "Reflections on the Thames, Westminster" - John Atkinson Grimshaw (1880)
