Producer Miles Maker has optioned the rights to an award-winning original motion picture screenplay titled SAFEWORD, an erotic psychological drama written by Greek playwright, actress and screenwriter Zoe Mavroudi.
SAFEWORD won Best Feature Screenplay at the 2013 Berlin Independent Film Festival. The script was awarded 2nd Place at the 2012 London Film Awards and received an Honorable Mention at the 2012 Los Angeles Reel Film Festival. Mavroudi, who is also an award-winning playwright (*Beauty is Prison-Time <http://zoemavroudi.com/>*) describes her story as a journey that walks the line between thriller and character study–both frightening and introspective.

The screenplay follows Kitty, a renowned piano virtuoso who suffers from debilitating performance anxiety. Eager to reclaim her professional career with a highly-anticipated comeback concert, she’s feeling the pressure once again–in pursuit of perfection under the watchful eye of her controlling husband. Seeking a non-medicated solution, Kitty pursues an anonymous affair with a stranger she meets on the Internet–a man sharply skilled at erotic knife-play. Despite the risk to her body and hands, Kitty is willingly seduced with intensely dangerous games during sordid encounters in a seedy hotel room. As Kitty begins to overcome her mental condition, she regains her musical confidence as well, but she soon discovers that falling in love with a mysterious man can be the most dangerous game of all. “It isn’t a story about sex,” Mavroudi adds. “It’s a story about intimacy, creativity and the human passions and flaws that cannot be tamed.”

Producer Miles Maker was immediately drawn to the script’s character-driven perspective. “SAFEWORD is well-penned, focused and nuanced–it’s risky and compelling with a rewarding story arc,” he touts. Maker optioned the screenplay after reading 96 scripts over the span of 100 days–the result of an ambitious crowd sourcing campaign to solicit the works of established and emerging screenwriters through social media and industry contacts. “Word of mouth quickly spread, then a mutual friend recommended Zoe’s script–so I asked her for it on Twitter,” Maker muses. Based on the premise, he opened SAFEWORD as soon as it arrived by email. “I was almost immediately aware I was reading something remarkably unfamiliar, yet there’s an accessibility to the story that draws you in.”
The film explores elements of the BDSM lifestyle (bondage and discipline, sadism and masochism). Practices and expressions–both erotic and non-erotic that involve restraint, sensory stimulation, role-playing and a variety of interpersonal dynamics reveal a complex subculture some self-identify as a sexual orientation. Referred to as “play”, BDSM is performed with the informed consent of all involved parties. To ensure safe, sane and consensual activity, partners pick a safe word–a special word that will make their partner stop before he or she goes too far. “Many mainstream depictions use eroticism and sadomasochism fleetingly–and only for titillation,” Mavroudi reflects. “SAFEWORD focuses on an extreme erotic activity without shying away from its physical and emotional excitement as well as the dangers.”
