In Liu Ye's work, humor and sadness exist as one. Part of the Post-1989
avant-garde movement, Liu is disinterested in the external flux taking
place in modern China. Instead, he aims to capture the inner solitude
and vulnerability of the individual facing the enormous changes taking
place both on a global scale and in Chinese society. In recent years,
Liu has traded in his fantastical style for a more serene and
naturalistic one. He often features adolescent girls engaging in
everyday activities like reading or embarking on a journey. Liu's
pursuit of perfection and beauty can be seen in the female figure's
soft, delicate features, which he renders in a style influenced by Dutch
master Johannes Vermeer.
