Mussorgsky- Where are you, Little Star (Boris Christoff bass)
This is a very old-fashioned and very sentimental song. Mussorgsky
composed it when he was 18 and I first heard it at about the same age. I
was very impressionable, and the impression has lingered ever since.
The pianist is Alexander Labinsky.
Little Star, where art thou?
Where is now thy light?
Was thy radiance dimmed
by the sombre veil
of a black, black cloud?
Of a black, black cloud?
Where, o lovely maid, art thou
Where's thy charm?
and ends with :
The black cloud has veiled
All the Star's bright light.
The Earth bleak and cold
Claimed the lovely maid.
